Video pro and content marketing expert Melissa Hollingsworth shares easy Zoom lighting how-tos.

In addition to workshops and coaching my clients over Zoom, I’m often asked questions about how to look good when presenting online.

  • “How do I get the glare off my glasses?”

  • “My ring light is so bright! How can I turn down the intensity?”

  • “How come I’m so shadowy? How do I fix it?”

  • “I have all the lights on behind me - why is my image so dark?”

Fortunately, I know someone who’s a pro at this stuff. Meet Melissa Hollingsworth of Worthwhile Media. Melissa brings years of experience in film production to the table, and with her help, I was able to up my Zoom appearance game! (Melissa’s also the person who shot the fab photos you see on this website.)

Bonus: Melissa used 2 cameras so we could see her entire Zoom set up. And yes, there’s a hack for those of you who wear glasses.

In Part 1 of our 3-part “look good online” conversation, we discussed how to light yourself on virtual meetings, including some budget-friendly hacks.

My 3 Favorite take-aways:

  • Use bounced light vs. direct light.
Direct light on your face can overdo it and light you too harshly. Learn how to bounce the light off another surface - perhaps off a wall across from you. If you wear glasses, this is the trick that will keep those ring light circles off your lenses in Zoom calls.

  • Don’t get hung up on buying an expensive light.
A simple desk lamp will do. Just make sure you can move it around to bounce the light if needed.

  • Diffuse your light to reduce harsh glare and shadows.
You don’t need a professional light-diffuser. Parchment paper works!
